Interested in the benefits of scent training?
Sniffing is a natural behaviour for dogs that allows them to process important information about the environment that they are in. Their sense of smell is vastly more sensitive than ours and is an ability we can use to provide enrichment for our pets. Opportunities for sniffing on a walk and activities set up in our homes and gardens involves a lot of sensory processing and mental stimulation helping to create calmness and relaxation afterwards, especially with high energy dogs that are often looking for something to do.
Why are dogs used for scent detection?
Scent detection training has long been widely used across the world, for working and operational services.
Our amazing dogs have been used to search for drugs, bombs, firearms, cash, contraband, missing people and human remains.
In recent years dogs are being used for assistance purposes, alerting their owners with illnesses such as diabetes and epilepsy prior to an episode and medical detection such as detecting cancer cells in humans.
No wonder our dogs are often interested in the contents of our kitchen bins.
How long is Sniffer Dog Training?
UK Sniffer Dog courses are running as 6 week courses for 1 hour per session.
Any dog can do this activity it doesn’t matter about their age, breed or disability.
If you have a reactive dog please get in touch for a chat, scent training activities can be very useful for giving your dog something to focus on rather than worry about strange dogs or people.
1 to 1 behaviour work may be advisable before joining a group session depending on your dog’s comfort zone and how much space they need.
